Arthritis is most common in the following people:
Dr. Frances Wilder, Ph.D., executive director of the Arthritis Research Institute of America (ARIA) has 20 years of data from study participants who volunteered to be part of ARIA’s 25-year study.
The more you weigh, the more pressure you put on your large joints, such as the hips, knees and ankles. Constant pressure from excess body weight will eventually cause the cartilage in these joints to break down over time, leading to osteoarthritis. The knees are particularly susceptible. In fact, 1 lb. of body weight equals 3 lbs. of pressure on the knees. A lot of extra weight on the knees could actually change their shape, which could also lead to osteoarthritis. Try to maintain the ideal weight for your height, and your joints will thank you.
Frequent exercise can prevent osteoarthritis by keeping the joints healthy and flexible. Moderate aerobic and weight-bearing exercises, accompanied by gentle stretching three to four times a week, is ideal for keeping your joints in tip-top condition. More intense exercise may actually wear down your joints over time, so don’t overdo it. Keep each exercise session to 1/2 hour to 1 hour, and you’ll be taking a positive step toward your joint health.
Eliminating or significantly reducing foods that are high in protein and purine will keep uric acid from building up and causing the form of arthritis known as gout. Keep your meat consumption down to a few ounces a week, and stick to lean meat, such as poultry, along with fish. Otherwise just keep it healthy by increase nuts, frozen or fresh veggies and fresh fruit into your diet while reducing sodas, alcohol, desserts and anything else that tastes really, really good.
